Each year, nearly 5,000 Mississippians experience their first stroke, and more than 1,500 die from one. Fortunately, Pine Belt residents have access to the best stroke care available at Forrest General Hospital, which is the only healthcare facility in the area to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center by DNV Healthcare, Inc.
Forrest General achieved certification as a Primary Stroke Center for two consecutive years by DNV Healthcare, the newest Medicare-approved hospital accreditation program. With this certification, patients who come to Forrest General with symptoms of a stroke will be put on the fast track to receiving exactly the care they need, delivered by specially-trained staff. Research has shown that stroke patients treated at Primary Stroke Centers have better outcomes, thanks to processes put in place to treat this life-threatening problem.
Because Forrest General Hospital wants to ensure that patients who have had a stroke have the best possible outcome and quality of life, the Primary Stroke Center includes care delivered in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Neurosurgery unit and patient unit 9T and features stroke care with coverage by a neurologist 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Nurses that care for stroke patients have each received extensive training in stroke-specific education.
